Finance Adviser Urges NBR Officials to Avoid Coercion with Taxpayers

In a recent meeting, the Finance Adviser to the Prime Minister, Mr. Abdul Karim, called on officials of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to adopt a more cooperative approach with taxpayers. He emphasized the importance of building trust and fostering a positive relationship between the tax authority and the public.

Addressing the NBR officials, Mr. Karim highlighted the need for transparency and fairness in tax collection processes. He urged them to refrain from using coercive measures, which can create fear and resentment among taxpayers. Instead, he advocated for a strategy that encourages voluntary compliance through education and support.

“Taxpayers are the backbone of our economy,” Mr. Karim stated. “It is crucial that we treat them with respect and provide the necessary assistance to help them fulfill their tax obligations. By doing so, we can increase tax revenues and promote a culture of compliance.”

The Finance Adviser also announced plans to introduce new initiatives aimed at simplifying the tax filing process and reducing bureaucratic hurdles. These measures are expected to make it easier for individuals and businesses to comply with tax regulations, thereby boosting overall tax collection.

In response, NBR officials expressed their commitment to implementing the adviser’s recommendations. They acknowledged the challenges faced by taxpayers and pledged to work towards creating a more taxpayer-friendly environment.

This move is seen as a positive step towards improving the relationship between the government and taxpayers, ultimately contributing to a more robust and transparent tax system in Bangladesh.
