London, September 26, 2024 – British MP Apsana Begum has called for an update from the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) regarding the investigation into the allegedly corrupt assets of former Bangladeshi land minister, Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Javed.

In a letter addressed to NCA Director General Graeme Biggar, Begum emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in the probe. She highlighted reports suggesting that Javed has amassed significant assets in the UK through corrupt practices, including over 280 properties valued at more than £150 million.

Begum, who represents the Poplar and Limehouse constituency, urged the NCA to collaborate with Bangladeshi authorities to ensure the swift investigation and repatriation of these assets. She stressed that the return of these assets would benefit the people of Bangladesh and support their fight for democracy and justice.

The MP’s inquiry follows ongoing investigations by Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), which is looking into allegations of tax evasion and embezzlement against Javed. The ACC has sought international cooperation to recover the alleged illicit assets.

Begum expressed hope that the NCA would clarify the steps taken to investigate and seize Javed’s assets, underscoring the significance of this action for both justice in Bangladesh and the UK’s integrity in the international arena.
