Brigadier General (Retd.) M Sakhawat Hossain, Advisor to the interim government’s Ministry of Shipping and Ministry of Labor and Employment, emphasized the need for Bhairab Port’s development during a site visit. He stated that plans are underway to elevate Bhairab to an international river port, making it part of multiple World Bank-supported development initiatives.

During his visit to Bhairab on Monday at 11:30 a.m., Sakhawat Hossain shared that a project with World Bank funding, totaling 93 crore BDT, is set to be implemented. This project includes the construction of three pontoons to facilitate the loading and unloading of launches, speedboats, and goods. He confirmed that the work order would be issued today, with work starting within 10 days, and the target completion date set for December of next year.

Addressing potential inconveniences, he requested that locals and business owners temporarily bear with the challenges as the project progresses, promising that once completed, it would significantly boost the region’s economic potential and employment opportunities. Sakhawat Hossain noted that some legitimate businesses might need to be relocated for the project, and the affected businesses would be compensated by the government.

Following his Bhairab inspection, Sakhawat Hossain proceeded to inspect Ashuganj Port. Accompanying him were BIWTA Chairman Arif Ahmed, Project Director Ayub Ali, and Bhairab Upazila Executive Officer Shabnam Sharmin.
