Due to student protests, the government has relieved the Vice-Chancellor, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, and Treasurer of Barisal University from their duties.

On Tuesday (May 13) night, three separate notifications from the Ministry of Education were issued to dismiss them. At the same time, an interim Vice-Chancellor has been appointed.

The notification stated that with the approval of the President and Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Suchita Sharmin, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Dr. Golam Rabbani, and Treasurer Dr. Mamun Or Rashid have been relieved from their positions.

In another notification, Professor Dr. Tawfiq Alam from the Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Rajshahi University was appointed as the interim Vice-Chancellor.

Students had been protesting for nearly a month demanding the removal of the Vice-Chancellor.

According to the students, “The VC was running the university in an autocratic manner. Cases and GDs (General Diaries) were filed against students, and fascist associates were rehabilitated.”

On Monday (May 12) afternoon, the students announced a set of demands including the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor.

Later that night, several students began a hunger strike and declared an indefinite complete shutdown of the university.
