Helal Hafiz, a Poet of Rebellion and Love, Dies at 76

Helal Hafiz, a distinguished Bangladeshi poet renowned for his evocative verses on rebellion and love, passed away on December 13, 2024, at the age of 76. His death marks the end of an era in Bengali literature, where his works have inspired generations.

Born on October 7, 1948, in Netrokona, Hafiz’s literary journey began early, culminating in the publication of his seminal poetry collection, Je Jale Agun Jwale (“The Water Where Fire Is Ignited”), in 1986. This collection resonated deeply with readers, leading to over 33 editions being published. His poignant lines from the poem “Nishiddho Sampadokiyo” (“Forbidden Editorial”)—”Ekhon joubon jar, michhile jabar tar shreshtho shomoy” (“Those who are young, now is the best time to join the procession”)—became rallying cries during Bangladesh’s anti-authoritarian movements.

Hafiz’s contributions to literature were recognized with the prestigious Bangla Academy Literary Award in 2013. Despite his acclaim, he led a modest life, often retreating from the public eye. In his later years, he faced multiple health challenges, including glaucoma, kidney complications, diabetes, and neurological disorders.
