Gaza Solidarity: SIU Community Participates in Worldwide Demonstrations

Sylhet, Bangladesh –   Sylhet International University (SIU) students, faculty, and staff came together on Monday to express solidarity with the people of Gaza. The demonstration was part of the Global Strike for Gaza and The World Stops for Gaza, global initiatives calling for an end to violence and justice for Palestinian civilians.

The protest began at 11:00 a.m. from the SIU campus and moved through the Shamimabad area. The peaceful march was led by SIU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Ashraful Alam, along with Mr. Khaled Hussain, Dean of the School of Science and Engineering; Nayeema Maswood Neela, Dean of the Department of Marketing and Social Science; Mr. Mohammed Rezaul Kabir, Proctor; and Professor Nitai Chandra Chanda, Treasurer.

“We want peace. We want the killings in Gaza to stop,” said Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Ashraful Alam during a brief address after the protest. “We stand for what’s right and tell the world to act. Israel’s actions are the worst. The way they are killing people is so cruel, it’s not normal at all, and they aren’t respecting human rights.”

Participants held banners and placards calling for peace, justice, and international humanitarian intervention. The protest reflected the SIU community’s concern about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and their support for those affected.

The event echoed similar protests taking place worldwide, as institutions and individuals continue to demand an end to the violence and advocate for the rights of the Palestinian people.
