Expelled National Citizens’ Committee Leader Arrested in Ramna Over Alleged Embezzlement

Dhaka, April 11, 2025Dilshad Afrin, a former leader of the National Citizens’ Committee (NCC) from Narayanganj, was arrested on Thursday night at Ramna Police Station in Dhaka. The arrest followed allegations of embezzling funds intended for victims of the July movement, as reported by bdnews24.com.

Members of the July Memorial Foundation, which had raised funds for those injured during the July protests, handed Afrin over to the police. Ramna Police Station chief Golam Faruk confirmed that the foundation’s legal officer filed an official complaint, leading to Afrin’s arrest.

The National Citizens’ Committee has been under scrutiny in recent months due to internal conflicts and controversies. In February, Shahadat Farazi Sakib, a member of the NCC’s Dhanmondi committee, was expelled amid allegations of involvement in violent activities.

The NCC, formed in the wake of the student-led movement that led to the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024, has faced challenges in maintaining its integrity and public trust. The arrest of Afrin adds to the organization’s ongoing struggles.
