Dhaka, Bangladesh – Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pranay Verma, has expressed strong optimism regarding the continued trade connectivity and economic cooperation between Bangladesh and India. He emphasized the significant role of these connections in furthering bilateral relations and fostering mutual benefits for both nations.

Key Focus on Bangladesh’s Textile Sector

On February 3, 2025, Verma participated in an interactive session with Bangladesh’s leading businesses and chambers of commerce, focusing on the country’s prominent Ready-Made Garments (RMG) sector. During this meeting, Verma underlined the importance of RMG for Bangladesh’s economic progress and its potential for reinforcing supply chain linkages between India and Bangladesh.

“The Ready-Made Garments sector plays an essential role in bringing our economies closer and creating opportunities for deeper cooperation,” said Verma.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

Verma reiterated India’s commitment to deepening its relationship with Bangladesh, emphasizing the importance of enhanced connectivity across all sectors. He pointed out the ongoing efforts to create more efficient and sustainable multimodal transportation routes, including road, rail, inland waterways, and coastal shipping. These developments, he said, would further strengthen economic opportunities between the two countries.

“Our philosophy is simple: transforming our geographical proximity into new economic opportunities. By improving connectivity, we can ensure sustained growth and prosperity for both our nations,” Verma stated.

Increasing Trade Potential

Verma highlighted the tremendous potential for growth in trade between the two countries. Studies have shown that improved transport infrastructure and regulatory frameworks could lead to an almost 300% increase in Bangladeshi exports to India. With Bangladesh on the cusp of achieving developing country status by 2026, India is eager to expand its trade and economic engagement, seeing Bangladesh as a key partner in the region’s economic growth.

As Verma pointed out, “India views Bangladesh as a valuable economic partner, and we are committed to working together to ensure our economies thrive.”

Conclusion

Pranay Verma’s remarks underline India’s enduring commitment to fostering a strong and mutually beneficial relationship with Bangladesh. By enhancing connectivity, trade, and economic cooperation, both countries hope to build a partnership that will deliver long-term benefits to their peoples and economies.
